Frequently asked questions
Is Upcraft really free?
Yes. No subscription and no watermark. To keep it free for everyone there's a daily fair-use limit (currently 5 thumbnail generations a day, two versions each). The counter resets at midnight UTC.
Do I need an account?
No. Upcraft creates an anonymous account automatically. You never enter an email or password.
Why does Upcraft ask to connect my YouTube channel?
So the AI can learn your existing thumbnail style (colors, fonts, faces, layout) and make new thumbnails that look like your channel. Access is read-only: Upcraft can't upload, edit or delete anything. You can also just type your @handle instead of signing in, or skip this step and pick a style preset.
I saw a "Google hasn't verified this app" screen.
While Google reviews Upcraft's read-only YouTube access, Google may show this notice. You can continue safely, or connect with your @handle instead, which doesn't need Google sign-in.
My channel doesn't show up when I sign in with Google.
If your channel belongs to a Brand Account, Google may connect your personal account instead. Use Enter @handle on the connect screen. It works with any public channel.
How long does a thumbnail take?
Usually under a minute, sometimes a bit longer at busy times. You can leave the app; if notifications are on, we'll tell you when it's ready.
A generation failed. Did I lose a credit?
No. If a generation fails, the credit is refunded automatically.
Can I put my face in thumbnails?
Yes. Add up to three selfies under Settings → Your photos, then choose "Me" as the subject. Upload only photos of yourself, or of people who've given you permission.
Can I use the thumbnails commercially?
Yes, the thumbnails you generate are yours to use on YouTube and elsewhere, subject to our Terms of Use.
Long-form vs. Shorts sizes?
Long-form thumbnails are 16:9 and Shorts thumbnails are 9:16 vertical. Both are exported as high-quality JPEGs under YouTube's 2 MB thumbnail limit.
How do I disconnect YouTube or delete my data?
Go to Settings → YouTube channel → Disconnect, or Settings → Delete my data to erase everything. You can also revoke Google access on the Google permissions page. See Delete your data.
Which AI models does Upcraft use?
Thumbnails are generated with OpenAI's GPT Image models through fal.ai. Style analysis and text suggestions use Anthropic Claude or Google Gemini models through fal.ai. See our Privacy Policy for details.
